There are perhaps a dozen companies running boat tours in Lofoten, and they are not interchangeable. One runs a purpose-built hybrid-electric catamaran with heated lounges and a no-feeding wildlife policy. Several run fast open RIBs that will get you within metres of a sea eagle. One, down in Reine, will take you through a maelstrom to a cave containing Bronze Age paintings.

There are also booking sites that look like operators but aren’t, and at least one “Trollfjord cruise” domain that no longer resolves to a travel website at all.

This is our ranking. We’ve published the methodology so you can disagree with it, named the legal entities behind each company, and included what the bad reviews say — because a list where everything is excellent isn’t a list, it’s an advert.

How We Ranked These

Four rules, stated openly:

1. We rank within categories, not across them. A three-and-a-half hour hybrid catamaran cruise and a two-hour RIB adrenaline run are different products bought by different people. Ranking them against each other would be meaningless.
2. Review volume matters as much as score. A 5.0 from twelve reviews tells you less than a 4.7 from six hundred. We favour operators strong on both, and treat anything under about thirty reviews as indicative only.
3. Recency and confirmed operation. Every operator named here was checked for current trading status in the Norwegian company register, has a working booking channel, and is running the product described in the 2026 season.

BRIM EXPLORER AS · Svolvær · Silent Trollfjord Cruise

Brim Explorer is the most distinctive boat operating in Lofoten, and the easiest to recommend to the widest range of people.

The company was founded in 2018 and has developed and built five electric and hybrid-electric vessels. The Lofoten boat runs the Silent Trollfjord Cruise — around three and a half hours from Svolvær’s main square, twice daily through a long season from roughly February to the end of October, with additional summer departures including evenings.

What you get: heated panoramic lounges, multiple open decks, a café and bar, an underwater drone deployed when conditions allow, and — the point of the whole thing — near-silent electric running inside the fjord itself. Instead of a diesel engine echoing off eight-hundred-metre walls, you get the sound of the fjord.

Two further things set it apart. It runs when other boats don’t — enclosed and heated means poor weather is an inconvenience rather than a cancellation. And it explicitly declines to feed the sea eagles, unlike most RIB operators, on the grounds that baiting wild birds to the boat isn’t appropriate. Whether you agree is your call, but it’s a stated ethical position rather than silence.

Rating: 4.8 on Tripadvisor; the Silent Trollfjord Cruise carries several hundred reviews across booking platforms.

Price band: premium — the highest per-ticket cost of the mainstream Lofoten cruises, though not per hour.

Best for: families, older travellers, photographers, anyone with mobility needs, and anyone visiting in questionable weather.

Not for you if: you want speed and spray. This is a slow, comfortable boat.

Best All-Rounder: XXLofoten

XXLOFOTEN AS · Svolvær

Established in 2005 and now employing around sixty people, XXLofoten is the broadest operator in Lofoten and the one to book if you want several different experiences from a single company.

The range covers RIB sea eagle safaris to the Trollfjord, Trollfjord cruises on a larger vessel, kayaking, biking — and, best of all, fishing aboard MS Symra, a wooden fishing cutter built in 1917 and protected as cultural heritage. Fishing from a boat older than most nations’ current constitutions is a genuinely different experience from fishing off a modern charter.

Rating: 338 reviews on Tripadvisor, ranked fourth of forty-eight tour operators in Svolvær; the sea eagle safari specifically scores 4.7 from 115 reviews.

Best for: travellers wanting one well-run operator for multiple activities, and anyone drawn to the heritage-boat angle.

GO2LOFOTEN AS · Svolvær

A local family business — six brothers — trading since 2018, and the operator that consistently comes up in reviews for guiding quality and flexibility rather than polish.

The fleet includes MS Alea, a heated boat with panoramic windows used for Trollfjord cruises and northern lights sailings, plus RIBs and traditional fishing boats. They also run midnight sun fishing in high summer.

What we like beyond the price: the operator responds to reviews publicly and honestly, including setting expectations that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. That’s a small thing that tells you a lot.

Best for: value-seekers, northern lights by boat, anyone wanting a small-operator feel.

Best for Thrill-Seekers: Lofoten Explorer

LOFOTEN EXPLORER AS · Svolvær

A RIB specialist since 2005, running four modern 12-passenger boats of about eleven metres. The core product is the Trollfjord and sea eagle safari, roughly ninety minutes to two hours, at speed, in the open air.

Skippers hold maritime and guiding certification. Thermal flotation suits, goggles and gloves are provided.

Also worth considering: RIB LOFOTEN AS, founded in 2008 and among the earliest RIB operators in Svolvær, running 12-passenger boats year-round. A smaller review footprint than Lofoten Explorer, so we rank it on heritage and product rather than volume — but a well-established outfit.

Best Off the Beaten Path: REEL

REEL AS · Reine (the operation formerly branded Aqua Lofoten Coast Adventure)

The most interesting trip in Lofoten, and comparatively few visitors do it, because it leaves from Reine rather than Svolvær.

The signature RIB run heads south past the Lofotveggen — the Lofoten Wall — crosses the Moskstraumen, the maelstrom that Poe and Verne wrote about, and lands on the wild outer coast for a guided walk into Refsvika cave, which holds painted figures thought to be somewhere around three thousand years old. The site is protected and can only be visited with an authorised guide.

They also run traditional fishing from a protected historic boat.

Rating: around 300 reviews on Tripadvisor.

One honest flag: at least one group reported arriving to find only a single boat running, causing long waits. Small operators can get stretched on peak days — book ahead and confirm.

Best for: travellers based in south Lofoten, and anyone who wants geology and archaeology with their boat trip.

Henningsvær

Henningsvær’s long-established operator runs large-RIB sea eagle and midnight sun safaris out through narrow straits to the open Atlantic — a different proposition from the sheltered Trollfjord run — plus fishing aboard the traditional boat MS Sabina.

On the National Geographic claim: the operator markets a National Geographic Best Summer Trips 2014 listing. That listing did feature a Lofoten midnight sun safari departing Henningsvær at 10pm — but it credited the trade name “Lofoten Adventure” and described a 2.5-hour trip. The company markets internationally under that name, so it’s very likely the same outfit. We mention it with that caveat rather than repeating the claim flat.

Best for: wildlife photographers, and anyone based in Henningsvær.

Best Premium: A Caveat Rather Than a Winner

The luxury option people search for is S/Y Stella Oceana, a hundred-foot ice-class sailing yacht with an on-deck hot tub, operated by World Sea Explorers.

Read this before you book: the company’s scheduled cruises now operate from Tromsø and the Senja area. Its Lofoten offering appears to be private charter only — not a scheduled day tour you can join as an individual.

If you want it, contact them directly and confirm exactly what’s on offer from Svolvær before making travel plans around it. Several third-party listings for “midnight sun yacht” trips are Tromsø departures presented ambiguously.

Best Paddling: A Separate Category

You can’t rank a kayak against a catamaran, so we don’t. The strongest paddling operators are Kayak Lofoten in Henningsvær, Lofoten Wild at Ramberg, Skrova Kayak Adventures, Northern Explorer at Eggum for the open-horizon midnight sun paddle, and the Reine-area operators including Saga Adventures and Reine Paddling.

Two Booking Sites to Avoid

This is the part no other page will tell you.

Search “Trollfjord cruise” and you’ll find several near-identical websites using that generic name. They are not all operators.

• One domain — the hyphenated version of “trollfjord-cruise” — no longer resolves to a travel website. Whatever now sits at that address, it is not a boat operator. Do not enter payment details there.
• Another is a legitimate booking agent rather than a boat owner, reselling seats on vessels including boats belonging to the operators listed above. Using an agent isn’t wrong, but you should know that the same boat is sold under several brand names at different prices, and that a booking with an agent doesn’t tell you which vessel you’ll be on.

Also worth knowing: at least one well-known Northern Norway adventure brand that appeared widely in Lofoten listings has ceased trading, while its listings persist on aggregator sites. If an operator’s own website is dead or unmaintained, don’t book through a third party that still lists it.

The rule: decide which vessel you want, then book with the company that owns it. If a listing won’t name the boat, ask before paying.

What the Bad Reviews Actually Say

Four themes recur across operators, and they’re worth knowing before you book.

The Trollfjord gets crowded. Multiple RIBs depart Svolvær at similar times and converge on the same narrow fjord. One reviewer counted six to eight boats inside at once and found it spoiled the atmosphere. If solitude matters, take the slower catamaran, book an off-peak departure, or go from Reine instead.

People are consistently cold. Even in July. Flotation suits are supplied on RIBs, but under them you need real layers — wool base layer, mid layer, hat. “Dress warm and then add another layer” appears in reviews repeatedly.

Wildlife is not guaranteed. Sea eagles are likely, not certain. Fish are likely, not certain. Aurora is a lottery. Operators who say so plainly are being honest, not hedging — and no Lofoten operator offers a no-sighting refund.

Small operators occasionally get stretched. Boats break, staff get sick, and a company running two RIBs has less slack than one running six. Book ahead in peak season and reconfirm.
